There's a network of through-going cycle routes throughout the Netherlands, with a total length of more than 4,500 km. All these LF-routes have already been signposted in both directions. The Dutch National Cycling Platform (Stichting Landelijk Fietsplatform) designed and manages this network. The Cycling Platform also publishes practical LF-route guides. For short distances you could use the cycling junction networks. Cycling junctions are ideal for planning a bicycle daytrip. The system is very simple. You can make your own route by cycling from junction to junction. Each junction is provided with a number and an information panel. The distance to the next junction is displayed on this panel. The routes between two junctions are signposted in two directions with white and green signs. Please check the videos at the right.
LF-route guides
The most appropriate cycle network map is the ‘Basiskaart netwerk LF-routes’. This map contains the entire network LF-routes, it costs €24.95 (scale 1:100.000). Only available in Dutch.
The compilation Tour of the Netherlands (Ronde van Nederland) combines (sections of) LF-routes. It's a cycle tour near to the borders of the Netherland. This is a spiral-bound guide containing detailed topographic maps (scale 1:100.000), compact information on the area and lists of useful addresses (€ 16.95). Only available in Dutch.
The guide Zuiderzeeroute consist of a file with A2-format handout pages with topographic map material (scale 1:100.000), brief information of the area and illustrations. Also included in the file is a thin booklet with background information concerning the route. Only available in Dutch.
Cycling ideas file
The Cycling Platform has also published a Cycling ideas file (Fietsideeënkaart). This brochure has an up-to-date survey of the many recreational cycling possibilities in the Netherlands and offers information on, for example, places to stay, cycling guides and maps, bicycle transportation by rail and bicycles for hire. The Cycling ideas file (Fietsideeënkaart) costs € 3,95.
